Australia

Where Australian engineering concentrates.

Sydney is Australia's deepest tech engineering market and our home base. Talent pools concentrate around fintech (Atlassian, Canva, Block, Airwallex, Up), AI scale-ups (Harrison.AI, Eucalyptus, Cortical Labs), enterprise cloud (CBA, Westpac, Macquarie, IAG), and a long Series B-D scale-up tail across health, govtech and infrastructure.

Melbourne is the second-largest Australian market with strength in fintech (Pearler, Athena, Up), healthtech (Eucalyptus, Mable, Healthengine), AI (Harrison.AI Melbourne, A2 Optics), and the consulting/SI tail (Mantel, Eliiza, Servian, Stax).

Brisbane is smaller but distinct, with deep specialism in defence-adjacent engineering, mining and resources tech, govtech (state and federal), and a growing scale-up scene around Fortitude Valley.

Perth, Adelaide and Canberra each have specific concentrations: Perth in resources tech, Adelaide in defence (the Australian shipbuilding precinct), Canberra in federal government and government-adjacent SIs. Coverage is available on request.

What you should pay senior engineers in Australia.

Bands below are for Sydney; Melbourne tracks 3-5% lower at senior IC and at parity at staff and above. Brisbane runs 8-12% lower across the board. Bands are base only; total compensation commonly runs 20-50% above base when equity is structured well.

New Zealand

New Zealand coverage.

New Zealand engineering hiring concentrates in Auckland (Xero, Datacom, MyTools, Sharesies, Hnry) and Wellington (Xero, Trade Me, government and government-adjacent agencies). Christchurch has a smaller but growing presence in tooling and SaaS.

NZD bands run roughly 10-15% below AUD bands at senior IC level for like-for-like roles, with the gap closing at staff and principal. Trans-Tasman placements (NZ candidate to AU role or vice versa) are common and we calibrate against both currencies at intake.

Remote-first ANZ

Remote-first across ANZ.

Roughly 40% of senior placements are remote-first. Most remote-first AU teams settle into a quarterly in-person cadence (one to two days, often Sydney or Melbourne).

Remote-first base salary now tracks Sydney bands within 3% at senior IC level. Most remote-first AU employers no longer regional-discount. Travel allowance and home-office allowance should be in the offer at signing, not negotiated later.
